Long before gaining infamy as one of the world’s most notorious sex offenders, Jeffrey Epstein started his career as a young math teacher at a prestigious private school in New York City. In the mid-1970s, Epstein, then 21 years old and without a completed university degree, taught at The Dalton School on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Former students recall his flamboyant and unconventional demeanor, with his penchant for wearing fur coats, gold chains, and open-neck shirts standing out in a school known for strict dress codes.
Decades later, some former students voiced concerns about Epstein’s behavior during his time at Dalton. Several students mentioned his unusual attention towards female students, which made them uncomfortable. Despite these unsettling memories, none of the female students who spoke publicly about Epstein’s time at the school reported any unwanted physical contact.
While Epstein’s tenure at Dalton was marked by mixed perceptions, his teaching performance ultimately led to his dismissal after about two years. Despite not meeting the standard qualifications, Epstein taught math and physics at the school and coached the Dalton Tigers math team. Some students remember him as inappropriate, while others recall him as supportive during their time at Dalton.
After leaving Dalton, Epstein transitioned into the world of finance, where he rose to prominence as a wealthy money manager connected to influential figures in politics, business, and royalty. His career flourished in the 1980s when he established his own financial firm, solidifying his status as a multimillionaire and acquiring significant real estate assets.
In the 1990s and mid-2000s, Epstein’s association with prominent individuals like Bill Clinton and Donald Trump grew, but beneath his outward success, he harbored a disturbing predilection for young women. Allegations of sex trafficking and misconduct surfaced, leading to legal troubles for Epstein, including a 2008 arrest on child sex offense charges.
Despite attempts to rehabilitate his image, Epstein’s legal issues persisted, culminating in his arrest on federal crimes related to sex trafficking in 2019. His death by suicide in a Manhattan jail cell in August of that year raised questions and speculation about the circumstances surrounding his demise.
While Epstein evaded justice, his associate Ghislaine Maxwell was convicted of sex trafficking in 2021. Epstein’s connections to powerful figures, including Trump, played a role in shaping political narratives, but controversies and legal battles continued to overshadow his legacy even after his death.
