“Former ‘EastEnders’ Star Paul Nicholas Stuns with New Role in ‘Fawlty Towers’ Stage Adaptation

Former “EastEnders” actor Paul Nicholas made a surprising appearance on “This Morning,” showcasing a striking transformation from his well-known roles. In 2024, the veteran actor ventured into a new acting endeavor by joining John Cleese’s stage adaptation of the iconic BBC series “Fawlty Towers” as the comical old Major.

At 81 years old, Nicholas graced the program in July of that year, sharing insights about his project alongside Cleese and a fellow cast member in a conversation with hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary. Renowned for his portrayal of Vincent in the 1980s sitcom “Just Good Friends,” Paul has also been a familiar face in soap operas, including his role as Gavin Sullivan in “EastEnders.”

Gavin, recognized for his distinctive white hair and intense gaze, appeared in Walford from 2015 to 2016. However, during his television appearance, Paul’s changed appearance, with noticeably less hair and wearing glasses, caught viewers off guard. The audience’s reactions flooded social media platforms, with comments expressing astonishment at Nicholas’s aging appearance, alongside some acknowledging the natural aging process.

The stage revival of the legendary “Fawlty Towers” brought the classic TV show to the West End, inspired by the eccentricities of real-life hotelier Donald Sinclair from Torquay’s Gleneagles Hotel. Co-created by John Cleese and Connie Booth, the show’s narrative centered on the outrageously impolite behavior of characters like Basil and Sybil.
