Former Grange Hill and London’s Burning actor John Alford allegedly placed a successful bet on a horse just before he was discovered deceased in his prison cell following an eight and a half-year sentence for various sexual offenses. The 54-year-old former child star was convicted of multiple counts of sexual activity with a child and additional charges involving assault and sexual assault against young victims.
Reportedly, John requested his sister to place a bet on Johnny Jury’s at the Cheltenham Festival, which turned out to be a winning wager. The horse, with odds of 20/1, triumphed in the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle on Friday, coinciding with John’s untimely passing. His passing, under investigation, awaits a post-mortem examination and further toxicology tests to determine the cause of death.
John, known for his roles in Grange Hill and London’s Burning, had a flourishing career in the 1980s and 1990s before his decline and subsequent imprisonment earlier this year for child sex offenses. His demise on March 13, 2026, in prison was confirmed, with authorities initiating an investigation as standard procedure for all custodial deaths.
The actor, who began his career at Anna Scher’s stage school and gained fame through Grange Hill and London’s Burning, faced legal troubles in September when he was convicted of sexually assaulting two teenage girls. The court heard that the assaults took place at the residence of a third girl, leading to his arrest and subsequent legal proceedings.
Throughout his acting career, John portrayed notable characters and participated in anti-drug campaigns. Despite the success he achieved in his early years, his life took a tragic turn with legal issues overshadowing his past accomplishments. The impact of his actions on his victims was highlighted during sentencing, portraying a stark contrast to his earlier career successes.
