Amy Carr, a former player for both Chelsea and Arsenal women’s football teams, has passed away at 35 years old following a prolonged battle with a brain tumor.
Her struggle began in 2015 when she fainted at the sight of a spider, leading to the discovery of a tumor the size of a golf ball during an MRI scan. Recalling the incident to the BBC, she expressed surprise at her extreme reaction, noting it was unlike anything she had experienced before.
Carr underwent a craniotomy to remove as much of the tumor as possible, which temporarily impaired her ability to walk and speak for eight days. Following this, she underwent radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and extensive physiotherapy to regain her physical and speech capabilities, culminating in an impressive marathon completion.
In 2024, she participated in the Dublin Marathon to raise funds for Brain Tumour Research, managing to raise £28,718 to support critical research in this field.
Tragically, last summer, Carr received a terminal diagnosis with a life expectancy of six to nine months.
Brain Tumour Research expressed their condolences, praising Carr for her strength and determination in facing the challenges of a high-grade brain tumor since 2015.
She represented England in 16 youth-level matches up to the Under-19s and played for Arsenal, Chelsea, and Reading during her career.
A celebration of Carr’s life is scheduled for March 23 in Hertfordshire. Donations for brain tumor research can still be made through the JustGiving page dedicated to her cause.
