Folk Music Pioneer Dolores Keane Passes at 72

Irish folk music has lost a legendary figure with the passing of Dolores Keane at the age of 72. Known as a pioneer in the genre, Keane was revered for her extraordinary singing talent and gentle demeanor. She peacefully passed away in her home in Galway, leaving behind a legacy that inspired generations of musicians.

A founding member of the renowned group De Dannan in the 1970s, Keane later pursued a successful solo career, releasing her first solo album, “There Was A Maid,” in 1978. Together with her then-husband John Faulkner, she ventured into composing music for films, creating documentary programs for the BBC, and forming bands like The Reel Union and Kinvara.

Keane’s musical influence extended beyond Ireland, with her solo album in 1991 featuring the poignant song “A Lion in a Cage,” which protested the imprisonment of Nelson Mandela in South Africa. The track soared to the top of the Irish charts, marking a significant milestone in her career.

Recognized for her immense contributions to Irish music and culture, Keane received prestigious accolades, including the ‘Fiddler’s Green Hall of Fame’ award in 1995 and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the TG4 Gradam Ceoil awards ceremony in Dublin in 2022.

The music community mourns the loss of a true talent, remembering Dolores Keane as a trailblazer whose legacy will forever resonate in the world of folk music.
