“Fatal Ski Gondola Crash Claims Woman’s Life in Swiss Alps”

A tragic incident unfolded at a renowned ski resort in the Swiss Alps as a woman lost her life in a ski gondola accident. The fatal event occurred at Engelberg ski resort on Wednesday morning, March 18, when the gondola detached from its cable, resulting in a fatal crash.

Authorities from the central Swiss canton of Nidwalden reported that the gondola separated from the cable under circumstances that remain unclear around 11:00 am local time. Witnesses mentioned the presence of strong winds at the time of the accident, with video footage capturing the gondola’s harrowing descent down Mt Titlis, flipping multiple times.

The victim, a 61-year-old woman from the region, was the sole passenger in the Titlis Xpress cart when it disconnected from the cable. The incident took place shortly after departing from the Trübsee station and while ascending the middle section of the mountain.

Following the accident, an extensive rescue operation involving air rescue services, ambulances, and law enforcement personnel was swiftly initiated. Eyewitnesses recounted experiencing turbulent winds and abrupt movements before the tragic crash.

The ski lift management expressed deep shock over the incident, with director Norbert Patt conveying condolences to the victim’s family. Beren Akkaya, a 14-year-old attendee at a local ski camp, shared the distress felt by witnesses, stating reluctance to use the gondola for descent after the incident.

In response to the accident, the cable car service was suspended, leading to the safe evacuation of approximately 100 to 200 passengers from around 40 gondolas. The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, as authorities seek to determine the circumstances that led to this tragic event.
