“Fatal Food Poisoning Outbreak Hits Brazilian Pizza Joint”

One fatality and 118 individuals have been hospitalized following the consumption of food from a popular pizza establishment in Brazil, South America. The deceased, identified as Raíssa Maritein Bezerra e Silva, aged 44, succumbed after dining at a Pombal venue in the Sertão region of Paraíba. Raíssa was among a group of over 100 people who fell ill with suspected food poisoning and were transported to two medical facilities in the area.

Pombal Region Hospital reported that Raíssa was brought in on Monday exhibiting typical food poisoning symptoms like abdominal discomfort, vomiting, and diarrhea. The hospital stated that her health deteriorated rapidly, requiring immediate intensive care due to signs of a severe infection. Tragically, Raíssa passed away the next day.

Meanwhile, Raquel Dantas, the legal representative of the restaurant La Favoritta, was present during the venue inspections conducted by the State Health Surveillance Agency (Agevisa). A relative of Raíssa mentioned that she and her partner dined at the pizzeria on Sunday night, fell ill, received initial treatment at Pombal Region Hospital, and returned the following day.

Dozens of patients, including Raíssa, experienced food poisoning symptoms, leading to the treatment of 40 individuals by Tuesday morning. Additionally, 74 people with similar symptoms sought medical attention at the hospital in Pombal over the weekend.

In response to the incident, health officials visited the pizzeria, subsequently shutting it down due to identified irregularities such as improper food storage and the presence of insects on-site. The local council has referred the case to Agevisa for further investigation and ongoing monitoring.

Agevisa’s health inspector, Sérgio Freitas, noted significant health regulation violations at the establishment, emphasizing the unsuitability of its operations. The pizzeria owner has been summoned for questioning, as the civil police launch an investigation while awaiting test results.
