Nigel Farage’s attempt to visit the Chagos Islands was backed by a generous donor from the Reform Party who covered the cost of his £12,500 seat on a private jet.
Christopher Harborne, a cryptocurrency billionaire based in Thailand, provided Farage, a prominent Brexit MP, with a seat on a chartered plane that flew him to the Maldives last month. Farage, known as “Nine Jobs Nigel” for his various side businesses in addition to his role as an MP, claimed the trip was for a humanitarian cause, delivering supplies to the Maldives.
Despite Farage’s social media post suggesting he was prevented from reaching the island, his actions were met with criticism. Former Tory defense secretary Ben Wallace emphasized the sensitive nature of the Chagos Islands, comparing allowing access to holding open days at classified military facilities.
Farage disclosed the cost of his return flight to the Maldives in his Register of Interests, raising questions about whether his video crew and team members also received complimentary seats. Harborne, also known as Chakrit Sakunkrit, has been a significant donor to British politics, with substantial contributions to the Reform Party prompting calls for donation limits from advocacy groups.
The purpose of Farage’s trip to the Maldives was to support Chagossians attempting to establish a settlement on a deserted island, aiming to reclaim their homeland. Despite not reaching the Chagos Islands due to restricted access, Farage’s actions drew attention to the plight of the Chagossians and the UK government’s decision regarding the territory.
Additionally, Farage’s recent visit to the US for a speaking engagement at an anti-climate think tank linked to Donald Trump garnered attention. Although his meeting with the president did not materialize, Farage received substantial compensation for his appearance. His speaking engagements have been a lucrative source of income since his election, with significant payments from external interests.
Farage’s involvement in international speaking engagements has been closely monitored, with his recent address to a conservative group in Washington DC. highlighted in financial disclosures. The trip aimed to strengthen ties with American political organizations and raise awareness for his political agenda.
