South Yorkshire Police have been made aware of a disturbing online post featuring a fake AI-generated image of missing individual Ben Needham, falsely depicting a reunion with his mother. The fabricated post displayed an age progression image of Ben as an adult with a child on his lap, seated beside his mother Kerry, with a caption stating, ‘Ben Needham, finally we are together.’ Another post on the Facebook page ‘Midnight Wire’ based in St Andrews, Scotland, claimed a supposed emotional meeting between Ben and his mother after 35 years of disappearance.
Kerry Needham, Ben’s mother, expressed her distress and shock upon encountering the misleading posts, leading her to report the incident to South Yorkshire Police. Kerry emphasized the emotional impact of the false content and urged people to report any sightings of such posts to prevent further dissemination.
Ben’s sister, Leighanna Needham, highlighted the detrimental effects of such misinformation on the ongoing investigation, stressing the importance of accurate information from the public. She condemned the spread of false claims, emphasizing the confusion and distress it causes in the search for Ben.
Kerry, residing in Turkey at the age of 51, remains concerned about the potential impact of the fake image reaching American audiences, fearing it could hinder the search for her son, who vanished at 21 months old from Kos, Greece. She suspects Ben may have been abducted and unlawfully adopted in the US, urging for genuine leads and cautioning against the dissemination of misleading information.
The professional age progression image, released in 2021 by forensic artist Tim Widden, has been instrumental in the search for Ben, with Kerry hopeful that it may provide crucial leads. Kerry remains vigilant against the spread of fake images that could impede the search effort, citing mounting evidence suggesting Ben may have been trafficked for adoption in New York.
The creation of the age progression image, using childhood photographs of Ben and family snapshots, was authorized by Kerry in collaboration with the Mirror to mark 30 years since Ben’s disappearance. Tim Widden submitted a comprehensive report on the image to detectives at South Yorkshire Police, aiding in their investigation of Ben’s disappearance.
