“Expectant Father Saved by Gym Owner’s CPR Heroics”

A 41-year-old expectant father who suffered a cardiac arrest during a workout class expresses gratitude for the gym owner’s swift response and first aid expertise that saved his life. Chris Wall, in June 2025, collapsed during an intense exercise session at Catalyst Training gym in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, led by Robin Oakley. Robin, 39, recognized the emergency, performed CPR, and utilized a defibrillator, actions that proved instrumental in rescuing Chris.

Following his recovery, Chris returned to the gym and is now anticipating the birth of his first child, referring to the baby as a “miracle.” He is also preparing for the London to Brighton bike ride organized by the British Heart Foundation. Chris acknowledges that he owes his life to the timely intervention at the gym, crediting the team’s preparedness and knowledge.

On the morning of June 14, 2025, Chris felt fatigued but proceeded with his routine, attending Robin’s fitness class after walking his dogs. Despite feeling slightly unwell during the workout, Chris unexpectedly collapsed about 45 minutes into the session. Robin, having encountered similar situations previously, acted promptly alongside other gym members to administer CPR and use the defibrillator until paramedics arrived.

Chris received necessary medical attention and was airlifted to Bristol Royal Infirmary after being shocked five times with a defibrillator. His recovery revealed that a ruptured plaque in his artery had caused a clot leading to the cardiac arrest. Despite facing physical and mental challenges, Chris committed to lifestyle changes, including quitting smoking and adopting a healthier diet.

Returning to the gym after a month, Chris gradually resumed physical activity under the supervision of a heart rate monitor. He still experiences apprehension but finds support from the gym community encouraging. Chris is now focused on training for the British Heart Foundation’s London to Brighton Bike Ride, scheduled shortly after the anniversary of his cardiac arrest.

As he prepares for the upcoming cycling event, Chris eagerly awaits the arrival of his “miracle baby” expected in late June. To register for the London to Brighton bike ride, visit www.bhf.org.uk/l2b.
