“Ex-soldiers’ Paternity Fraud Scheme Exposed in Court”

A man who committed fraud by attempting to deceive authorities with a fake paternity test has been exposed in court. Gareth Lloyd, a former soldier aged 59, refused to acknowledge fathering a child when his ex-girlfriend informed him of her pregnancy, instructing her to terminate it. Following the child’s birth, Lloyd pressured his friend, Phillip Jones, 61, also an ex-Welsh Guard, to provide his DNA for the paternity test.

However, their scheme unraveled when the woman insisted Lloyd was the father, prompting an investigation. Despite initially denying any connection to the woman, Lloyd eventually agreed to a DNA test after being subjected to a Deduction of Earnings Order. Subsequent tests revealed discrepancies, leading to suspicions and further scrutiny.

Evidence emerged that Lloyd had been in contact with Jones around the time of the DNA tests, with their phones placing them near the testing clinic. Both men underwent DNA testing, ultimately confirming Jones as the biological father. Jones confessed to aiding Lloyd, while Lloyd, who had served in the military for 35 years with deployments in conflict zones, remained silent during questioning.

In court, both men pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud. Lloyd expressed remorse, repaying a significant portion of the defrauded amount and establishing a relationship with his daughter. Jones, argued to have led an otherwise honorable life, received a suspended sentence. Lloyd received a 12-month suspended sentence and community service, while Jones was handed a three-month suspended prison term.

The presiding judge rebuked Lloyd for his selfish actions, highlighting his disregard for his responsibilities as a parent and a former serviceman. Addressing Jones, the judge condemned his dishonorable behavior, contrasting it with his previous respectable conduct serving the country.
