Joey Barton faces a significant legal outcome after being accused of assaulting a man who was hospitalized following an alleged incident near a golf course.
The former footballer, aged 43, along with Gary O’Grady, were charged with causing intentional harm earlier this month following the purported attack near the Huyton and Prescot Golf Club in Merseyside. Barton has been in custody since March 10 and recently appeared for a bail hearing at Liverpool Crown Court.
Although most of the proceedings were held privately, the judge made a public ruling stating that Barton must remain in custody.
Barton was not present during the hearing, with his representation handled by Simon Csoka KC. Judge David Potter denied Barton’s bail application. Meanwhile, Barton’s co-accused, O’Grady, was granted bail under the condition that he avoids contact with the victim, Barton, a witness, or the golf club in question.
Barton is scheduled for his next court appearance on April 7. According to reports from Liverpool Magistrate’s Court, Barton, O’Grady, and Kevin Lynch were together on March 8 when the alleged incident occurred.
Emergency services were called to the golf club at 9 pm on March 8 after a man sustained severe facial and bodily injuries. Barton, known for his football stints at clubs like Manchester City, QPR, Newcastle, Rangers, Burnley, and Marseille, also has a podcast called “Common Sense With Joey Barton” discussing various societal issues.
The victim, Mr. Lynch, a prominent figure in Merseyside football management, has managed teams like Marine, City of Liverpool FC, and Prescot Cables.
Following Barton’s arrest, Merseyside police reported that Mr. Lynch was hospitalized with serious injuries. Prosecuting attorney Chelsea Kearns mentioned that Mr. Lynch is currently receiving medical treatment and there is concern about potential eyesight loss due to the assault.
Efforts are being made to support Mr. Lynch during his recovery, with ongoing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
