A travel specialist from consumer advocate Which? has highlighted select global destinations known for their abundant sunshine and warm weather in April – a welcomed respite for Brits enduring dreary skies for months. Some of these places are conveniently located in Europe, while others may require a longer journey.
According to travel journalist Jo Rhodes, these destinations often experience temperatures reaching up to 31°C in April. Rhodes suggested that an April holiday could offer a much-needed boost of vitamin D for those still waiting for summer. Additionally, the Easter bank holidays present an opportunity to maximize annual leave for an extended getaway.
One of the recommended destinations is a group of Indonesian islands with sun-kissed coastlines and impressive temples that have attracted visitors for many years. Travellers are drawn to sites like the floating Hindu water temple of Ulun Danu Beratan and the sacred springs of Tirta Empul. Meanwhile, Ubud in the highlands showcases picturesque stepped rice terraces and lush rainforests during the beginning of the dry season in April.
Rhodes also highlighted the attractions of the Andalucian city, a gateway to the Costa Del Sol, known for its historic sites like the 11th-century Alcazaba fortress and a Roman theatre at the foot of Mount Gibralfaro. With temperatures reaching nearly 20°C in April, the city becomes especially charming during Easter with religious processions filling the streets.
Which? recommended a “laid-back waterfront city” as one of the top spring destinations, where April temperatures hover around 19°C. Rhodes described the Portuguese capital as having a beautiful “old town in bloom,” illuminated by eight hours of daily sunshine. Visitors can explore the Alfama district on the yellow number 28 tram, enjoying the vibrant bougainvillea adorning balconies and doorways.
Bordeaux, often called ‘Little Paris,’ was noted for its affordable airfares in April and more than just its renowned wines. The city offers visitors a pleasant climate with temperatures reaching 18°C, and attractions like the tree-lined riverside promenade and the charming Chartrons neighborhood.
Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, boasts quaint hilltop villages, well-preserved ancient sites, and sandy beaches with temperatures around 18°C in April. The island offers a less crowded experience compared to the busy summer months as days become warmer and longer.
For those seeking a destination beyond Europe, Georgia offers majestic mountains, ancient monasteries, and a vibrant culinary scene with temperatures around 18°C in April. The capital, Tbilisi, features a dramatic valley setting, a colorful Old Town, and unique attractions like dome-shaped bathhouses and cobblestone streets.
In Japan, the imperial capital shines during the cherry blossom season in April with temperatures around 17°C. Visitors are encouraged to explore attractions like the bamboo forest, Oi River houseboat rides, and the Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama, home to over 100 Japanese macaques.
