“Embracing Unity: Open Iftars Foster Inclusivity and Community Engagement”

As Ramadan comes to a close each year, I often reflect on the month as a deeply humbling experience. Fasting from sunrise to sunset for 29 or 30 days requires resilience and dedication. However, it can also be a time of solitude, especially when balancing work responsibilities, fatigue, and finding moments for prayer in a non-Muslim environment where explanations about Ramadan are often necessary.

In recent years, my perspective on Ramadan has shifted, and I have come to appreciate it more. Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar, is now embraced by mainstream culture. Supermarkets display banners wishing customers ‘Ramadan Mubarak’ and stock up on essential items like dates for breaking the fast, traditional food ingredients, and Eid greeting cards.

One significant development during Ramadan is the emergence of Open Iftars across the country. These events, hosted by various organizations including charities, foodbanks, and even police departments, bring people together from diverse backgrounds to share in the breaking of the fast. Open Iftars create a sense of unity and inclusivity, allowing individuals of all faiths to partake in the experience.

This year, I had the privilege of attending an Open Iftar at Notts County FC stadium, organized by Notts County Foundation and Mercy for All charity. The event brought together a diverse group of attendees, fostering meaningful conversations and connections. The evening commenced with the call to prayer followed by breaking the fast with dates and water, leading to communal prayers and a delightful buffet.

Vicky Spargo, deputy sport and inclusion manager at Notts County Foundation, emphasized the importance of Open Iftars in breaking down barriers and promoting community cohesion. The event also raised funds for Mercy for All, a charity dedicated to supporting orphans, women, and families in need locally and globally.

Zarmeena Quarishi, an ambassador for the charity, highlighted the significance of such initiatives in promoting cultural understanding and unity, especially in times of social unrest. The event was praised for its role in fostering community engagement and celebrating diversity, echoing the sentiment that unity is essential in the current climate.
