Elderly Woman Dies Alone in A&E Corridor

A young woman expressed her shock after witnessing an elderly woman pass away alone in an A&E corridor without anyone by her side. Nadia Wainwright from Henllan, north Wales, recounted the distressing incident at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd hospital’s A&E department. According to Nadia, the elderly lady was left unattended, surrounded by other patients, until a paramedic eventually covered her face with a blanket for dignity.

Nadia described the chaotic and overcrowded scene in the hospital’s A&E, with patients lining the corridors in chairs and beds. She emphasized the need for better care, especially for vulnerable individuals like the elderly lady she saw. Nadia also shared how the paramedic reacted upon realizing the woman had passed away, highlighting the emotional impact the situation had on her and her family.

Furthermore, Nadia mentioned another incident where her mother had to assist an elderly lady in the overflowing A&E department. She criticized the lack of dignity and care for patients in such conditions, calling for more attention from health board officials.

Local councillors expressed their concerns about the situation, highlighting the deficiencies in the A&E department and calling for urgent improvements. In response, Angela Wood, the executive director of nursing and midwifery at the health board, acknowledged the distress caused by such incidents and emphasized the importance of providing care with dignity and respect.

Wood explained that while corridor care is sometimes necessary due to the high pressure on Emergency Departments, efforts are being made to improve patient flow and overall care standards. She reassured that steps are being taken to address the root causes of long waiting times and overcrowding in A&E departments.

The Welsh Government also responded to the issue, stating that care in non-clinical environments is unacceptable and outlining efforts to enhance staffing, emergency care, and community services with additional funding. They emphasized the need for system-wide reforms to ensure efficient patient movement through hospitals and reduce avoidable harm.
