The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has provided an update on a significant change in benefits related to Universal Credit. Notifications have been sent to specific claimants regarding this matter.
Over the past few years, millions of individuals receiving older benefits have gradually transitioned to Universal Credit, replacing the previous ‘legacy benefits.’ The migration process has been ongoing in phases, with the majority of claimants now transferred to Universal Credit. The DWP confirmed earlier that certain benefits would cease by the end of March 2026 as part of this initiative.
Claimants on six legacy benefits have been part of the migration process. When asked for an update on the project and the remaining individuals yet to switch to Universal Credit, a DWP spokesperson stated:
“The department has been transferring individuals from legacy benefits to Universal Credit since 2022, and the majority have completed the transition. Support is available for those transitioning to Universal Credit, including a dedicated helpline, guidance on gov.uk, and assistance from Citizens Advice’s Help to Claim service.
“Claimants receiving legacy benefits will continue to do so until they transition to Universal Credit or until the specified deadline. Migration notices are sent out to prompt applications for Universal Credit.
Applicants typically have three months to apply for the new benefit to start receiving payments. After the deadline, payments from the old benefit will cease.
The DWP offers an ‘enhanced support journey’ to aid vulnerable claimants on Employment and Support Allowance and Income Support in transitioning. This support may involve phone consultations or home visits to assist with application and transition.
Furthermore, the department assures that if circumstances remain unchanged after transitioning to Universal Credit, the benefit entitlement will stay the same.
