A police officer involved in corrupt activities, who disposed of her mobile phone while being investigated, has been sentenced to jail. Samarah Kamal, a member of Lancashire Constabulary’s Anti Corruption Unit, was absent from her residence when officers tried to contact her on July 24, 2023.
Despite attempts to reach her on her personal phone, Kamal did not respond initially. Subsequently, she agreed to meet the investigating officer regarding a money laundering inquiry. However, within minutes of their conversation and her arrival, it was discovered that she had discarded her mobile phone, leading to the loss of crucial evidence.
Following consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service, Kamal, aged 27, was charged with perverting the course of justice. Lancashire Police expressed disappointment in her actions, stating that they did not meet the expected standards of a police officer.
Kamal, who served in the East Response Investigations Team, was sentenced to nine and a half months in prison on March 12 at Liverpool Crown Court after pleading guilty to the charges. She was subsequently dismissed from Lancashire Constabulary and added to the Barred List.
Det Supt Pete Reil, Head of the Professional Standards Department, condemned Kamal’s misconduct, emphasizing the breach of public trust. This incident occurred amidst an ongoing investigation into police corruption, aiming to identify individuals involved in framing innocent individuals decades ago.
