“Compassionate Victim Forgives Liverpool Parade Crash Driver”

A man, Stefan Dettlaf, who was injured in the Liverpool parade crash has shown compassion towards the perpetrator, Paul Doyle. Dettlaf, 73, was one of the 134 people hurt when Doyle drove his Ford Galaxy into the celebrating crowds of Liverpool fans during the Premier League title victory parade last May.

Doyle’s dashcam footage captured his reckless actions, including speeding, overtaking vehicles, and running red lights before he plowed into the crowds in Liverpool city center. Instead of stopping, he used his car as a weapon to push through the people.

Barreling into fans, hurling insults, and demanding space, Doyle’s rampage was halted by the brave intervention of former soldier Daniel Barr and the numerous injured individuals trapped under his vehicle.

Facing 31 charges, the 54-year-old pleaded guilty on the second day of his trial and was sentenced to 21 and a half years in prison. Throughout his court appearances, Doyle expressed remorse, stating that he had devastated his family’s lives.

Now, one of the elderly victims, Stefan Dettlaf, has shared his empathy for the driver who caused havoc among the terrified pedestrians. Dettlaf, who suffered six fractured ribs and spent days in the hospital, along with his wife Hilda, who was also seriously injured, expressed his feelings towards Doyle.

In an interview with 5 News, Dettlaf mentioned his initial struggle to talk about the incident due to emotional breakdowns and flashbacks. Another victim, Dean Townsend, 31, from Widnes, highlighted his health issues and psychological injuries post the traumatic event.

Both Dettlaf and Townsend presented impactful statements during Doyle’s sentencing, reflecting on the physical and emotional toll the incident had taken on their lives. Detective Chief Inspector John Fitzgerald emphasized the severe impact of Doyle’s actions on the victims and the city’s collective sense of celebration.
