Sean Hughes’ family has expressed their pride after the comedian donated his £4 million estate to charity before his passing in 2017 at the age of 51 due to cirrhosis of the liver.
The late Never Mind the Buzzcocks star bequeathed three properties to the homeless charity Shelter, which included his £1.8 million home in north London and two other properties valued at £2.15 million. Despite facing a lengthy legal battle over the wording in his homemade will, the High Court in London has now ruled in favor of Shelter receiving the properties.
In a statement, Sean’s family conveyed their joy at honoring his wish, highlighting his deep concern for housing vulnerability. They emphasized the importance of considering those less privileged when planning one’s estate, with a touch of legal advice to avoid complications.
Although Sean had written his will without legal aid, causing ambiguity, his family agreed to fulfill his desire for the properties to benefit the charity. The court ultimately confirmed the decision.
Shelter’s Director of Income Generation, Andy Harris, expressed gratitude for Sean’s generous bequest, emphasizing the significance of such donations in supporting the organization’s efforts to address housing emergencies and advocate for secure housing rights.
Beyond his philanthropy, Sean, a former Perrier Comedy Award winner, was renowned for his contributions to comedy, literature, and radio. Despite personal struggles with alcohol, his legacy endures through his charitable contributions and artistic achievements.
