“Claim Tax Benefits for Work Uniforms Now!”

Workers who wear specific uniforms may be overlooking potential tax benefits worth hundreds of pounds. According to a statement on the MoneySavingExpert website, individuals have a limited time frame to make a claim for these benefits.

If you are required to maintain your work uniform by washing, repairing, or replacing it yourself, you could be eligible to reclaim significant amounts in tax expenses for up to five years. This applies regardless of whether your uniform is as simple as a branded T-shirt or as complex as that of a pilot, police officer, or nurse.

To determine if you qualify for a tax refund on your uniform, you must meet certain criteria, as outlined by Express. The apparel must be a recognizable uniform that your employer mandates you wear while on duty.

A simple test suggested by MSE is whether a member of the public could identify your employer based on the logos or company name on your uniform. It does not need to be a widely known brand, just a distinctive uniform.

Additionally, individuals must be responsible for purchasing, cleaning, repairing, or replacing the uniform themselves to be eligible for the refund. It is crucial to have paid income tax in the year for which the claim is made, as the refund is aimed at reducing tax liability, not providing cash back.

The amount you can reclaim through a uniform tax rebate varies based on your circumstances. The standard flat-rate expense allowance for uniform maintenance is £60, which essentially refunds the tax you would have paid on that amount.

Moreover, your job role may influence the reclaimable sum. You can check the full list of eligible occupations to see if yours is included.

You can backdate your claim for up to four previous tax years in addition to the current allowance, totaling five years. For basic-rate taxpayers who wore a uniform during all five years, the rebate will be £60.

The deadline to claim relief for the 2021/22 tax year is April 5, 2026. Failure to claim before this date will forfeit the opportunity to backdate for that year.

Applications can be submitted online or by post using form P87. If posting, mark the envelope with ‘Repayment Claim’ and complete a separate form for each year being claimed. For alternative format needs, contact HMRC at 0300 200 3310. Provide information on your expenses and tax payments when submitting your claim.
