“Children Stuck in Hospitals Due to Support Delays”

Children are facing a “hidden crisis,” enduring prolonged stays in hospitals while awaiting necessary support to return home, according to recent research by the Children’s Commissioner for England. The study revealed that children are experiencing delays in discharge, leading to extended periods away from school and family life.

Analysis of NHS England data indicated that 70,000 children spent over two months in hospital, with 1,300 of them staying for more than a year. Moreover, more than 260,000 children spent three weeks or more in hospital during their childhood. Disparities were also observed, with a higher percentage of children from disadvantaged backgrounds spending extended periods in hospitals compared to their more privileged counterparts. Additionally, children from ethnic minority backgrounds were disproportionately affected by prolonged hospital stays.

The report by Children’s Commissioner Dame Rachel de Souza highlighted that medical advancements have enabled children with complex conditions to live longer lives. However, the support services outside hospitals, such as social care, housing, and home nursing, have not kept pace with these advancements, leading to children being stranded in hospitals unnecessarily.

Dame Rachel emphasized the urgent need for a government-led initiative to streamline education, social care, and health services to facilitate the timely discharge of children from hospitals and ensure appropriate support upon their return home. She also called for enhanced paid leave for parents of sick children to prevent financial challenges during their child’s illness.
