British residents holding onto old stamps should check their validity before using them for postage to avoid potential charges from Royal Mail. The MoneySavingExpert team, headed by Martin Lewis, has highlighted the ‘Swap Out’ scheme in response to an upcoming stamp price increase set for April 7. Using non-barcoded stamps since July 2023 may lead to surcharges, with penalties of £2.50 for letters/large letters and £3.50 for small parcels in 2026.
Royal Mail introduced barcodes to standard stamps in 2022, allowing a six-month grace period for the transition. However, using outdated non-barcoded stamps now results in surcharges according to reports. The move is part of Royal Mail’s modernization efforts to enhance operational efficiency, security features, and customer services.
To exchange non-barcoded stamps for newer barcoded versions, individuals can access ‘Swap Out’ forms on the Royal Mail website or from Post Office branches. Those exchanging over £200 worth of stamps need to fill out a separate form, available online. While there is no deadline for exchanges, prompt action is advised, and Royal Mail aims to process requests within 30 days.
Various types of stamps dating back to 1971 can be exchanged via the scheme, excluding non-barcoded Christmas stamps that remain valid for postage.
