British Vets Rescue Injured Dogs from China’s Dog Meat Trade

Heroic British veterinarians are embarking on a special mission to assist injured dogs rescued from the dog meat trade in China. Supported by a UK charity for disabled dogs, they are traveling to Harbin, located in the northeast of the country, to provide medical support at a shelter caring for the ailing canines. Orthopedic vets Vanessa Waite and Calum Marshall from Surrey will collaborate with local volunteers and aim to bring back at least 10 dogs for treatment in the UK.

Cassie Carney from the charity Broken Biscuits, who organized the trip, emphasized that the mission is not about taking over but standing in solidarity with the dedicated local team. She highlighted the lack of orthopedic treatment for disabled dogs in China and the harrowing conditions these animals have endured. Tim Giles, accompanying the vets, expressed the mission’s goal of offering a brighter future for the dogs and sharing knowledge to benefit many more animals in need.

The team will partner with Harbin SHS Animal Rescue, led by Irish rescuer Hayley, known for saving dogs from slaughter and providing them with care. Many dogs arrive at the shelter with mobility issues stemming from untreated fractures, joint damage, and spinal injuries due to prolonged neglect.

In addition to providing veterinary expertise, the team plans to donate 20 dog wheelchairs. The most severely injured dogs, including Pickle, a mobility-challenged miniature Poodle, and Summer, a paraplegic golden lab, will be brought back to the UK for treatment and adoption through Broken Biscuits. Dr. Waite from The Vet Station in Surrey highlighted the transformative impact of specialist care on these animals and the collaborative effort to improve their outcomes.

China’s dog meat trade, responsible for the slaughter of around 10 million dogs and 4 million cats annually, is often associated with criminal activities such as pet theft and illegal transportation. Animals are subjected to inhumane conditions during transport, suffering from dehydration, injuries, and extreme stress before reaching slaughterhouses.
