British Family Stuck in Dubai War Zone Finally Escapes

A group of eleven British citizens were stranded in Dubai as conflict erupted in the Middle East while they were preparing to return home on a British Airways flight. Mark and Zoe Ruffels, accompanied by their children Harrisen, 22, and Freya, 20, were part of the group. Initially planning to fly back after a week-long stay at an Airbnb with friends Grainne and James Pryor, their journey took an unexpected turn as they found themselves stuck in the midst of a war zone.

Forced to extend their stay by nine days due to the escalating situation, the group had to adhere to strict indoor restrictions resembling a “lockdown but with missiles,” incurring an additional cost of £15,000. Eventually, they managed to embark on a challenging eight-hour desert journey to Muscat in Oman before finally catching a flight back home in the early hours of Monday.

Zoe, a 53-year-old market researcher from Camberley, Surrey, who organized the trip, expressed frustration at the lack of communication and support from British Airways during the ordeal. Despite the harrowing experience, the group expressed gratitude to the UAE Government for ensuring their safety.

The Pryors, who were part of the group, shared their experiences of witnessing Iranian missile strikes while seeking shelter in an underground car park. Multiple attempts to secure return flights with British Airways were thwarted, leading them to opt for an alternative route via Oman.

Reflecting on their ordeal, Zoe emphasized the challenges faced, particularly concerning the safety of children and elderly members in their party. The group, now safely back in the UK, expressed relief at being home but acknowledged that it would take time to process the traumatic events experienced during their unexpected extended stay in Dubai.

Audrey Ruffels, 79, Mark’s mother, reached out to local MP Jeremy Hunt for assistance while stranded in Dubai, prompting intervention in contacting British Airways for support. In response to the situation, British Airways issued a statement outlining their operational challenges in the region and efforts to assist affected customers.
