Boxing Legend Ricky Hatton’s Brain Revealed CTE Indications

Boxing icon Ricky Hatton was discovered to have a degenerative brain condition prior to his passing. Post-mortem examinations revealed indications of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in the former world boxing champion. The inquest disclosed that Hatton’s brain analysis exhibited degenerative alterations commonly found in elderly individuals, often associated with conditions like Alzheimer’s disease. Experts stated that these findings aligned with CTE resulting from repeated brain trauma, a common occurrence in boxers, albeit at a less severe level, leading to memory loss and cognitive decline.

Nevertheless, the damage was deemed non-contributory to his demise. The inquest also highlighted that there was no conclusive evidence suggesting that Hatton had intended to commit suicide, despite the official cause of death being asphyxiation. Senior coroner Alison Mutch concluded with a narrative verdict, stating the uncertainty surrounding Hatton’s intentions.

Hatton’s family mentioned that he was in high spirits and optimistic about the future just before his passing. They portrayed him as a dedicated father who was in a better place than he had been in years, despite his past struggles with substance abuse.

On the evening of September 12 last year, Hatton dined with his daughters and granddaughter at a pub but failed to attend a commitment the following day. His manager discovered him unresponsive at home, well over the legal alcohol limit. Tests also indicated prior cocaine use and traces of cannabis, which were not deemed causal factors in his death.

Detective Sergeant Helen Grigalis stated that Hatton had sent a message to a friend and was found fully dressed with music playing and an empty wine bottle nearby by his manager. Emergency services confirmed his passing, with no evidence of foul play or suicidal intentions.

In a statement, Hatton’s son emphasized his father’s determination in sports and generosity towards others. The family believed that Hatton had future plans and did not suspect premeditation in his passing, although they had observed a decline in his short-term memory. His daughters were deeply affected by his death, leaving a lasting impact on the family.
