Garden specialists are advising individuals to pay attention to their outdoor furniture this weekend, with the prediction of ‘blood rain’ sweeping across the UK. It is anticipated that traces of Saharan dust will be present in the rain, potentially causing rust-like reddish stains on outdoor furniture. Magdalena Gierasinska, the Head of Product and Displays at Barker and Stonehouse, cautioned that garden furniture could sustain irreparable damage.
Experts have highlighted that the coarse dust carried in the rain can result in scratches and surface deterioration if left on furniture, while the brown or red sand may cause staining. Additionally, it has been associated with the growth of mold, mildew, and harm to fabrics.
Dr. Claire Ryder, an Associate Professor specializing in Mineral Dust Processes at the University of Reading, explained that as rain passes through the Saharan dust-laden air, it collects tiny particles of reddish-brown sand, leaving rusty orange marks on various surfaces. Although there is no significant health concern regarding the expected levels of Saharan dust in the UK, individuals with respiratory sensitivities may notice a slight rise in airborne particles before rainfall disperses them, with concentrations expected to remain below levels triggering air-quality alerts.
Despite the low health risk, Lena emphasized the threat to garden furniture, advising proper protection measures. She highlighted the common mistake of leaving outdoor furniture exposed to the elements without adequate shelter. Particularly during wet and windy conditions, wooden and metal furniture are susceptible to damage. Lena recommended using corrosion-resistant paints for added protection against salt exposure but stressed the importance of covering or storing aluminum furniture during severe weather conditions.
For those with limited storage space, Lena suggested investing in high-quality waterproof and wind-resistant outdoor furniture covers to use during extreme weather. Properly fitting and securing the covers can prevent damage from gusty conditions. Over time, even with diligent care, garden furniture will naturally deteriorate. Lena advised monitoring for signs such as soft spots in wood, rust on metal, or instability when using the furniture as indicators for a potential upgrade to maintain both style and safety in outdoor spaces.
To safeguard and clean furniture effectively, following these guidelines is essential.
