Cheltenham Festival rider Ben Jones recently shared insights into the admirable personality of Harry Redknapp as the Gold Cup approaches. Jones recounted a touching moment from his interaction with the former Tottenham and Portsmouth manager.
Known for his passion for horse racing, Redknapp will have his debut runner, The Jukebox Man, in the prestigious Gold Cup at this year’s March meeting, trained by Ben Pauling. The gelding secured a spot in the lineup following a notable victory in the King George at Kempton last year, positioning him as one of the top contenders. Jones, who was aboard for the triumph, will be in the saddle for the upcoming race on Friday.
As Pauling’s stable jockey, Jones has had the opportunity to ride several of Redknapp’s horses and has developed a close relationship with the 79-year-old. Reflecting on his bond with the former Premier League manager ahead of a significant race, Jones praised Redknapp’s character and genuine love for the sport.
Speaking exclusively to Mirror Racing, Jones described Redknapp as a “top bloke” and highlighted the manager’s sincere interest in horse racing. Recalling their first meeting during The Jukebox Man’s debut hurdle run in 2023, Jones emphasized Redknapp’s dedication to the sport beyond just the high-profile events.
Jones expressed gratitude for the chance to ride The Jukebox Man for Redknapp, acknowledging the significance of the opportunity. He also reminisced about their previous success at the Festival, where he guided Shakem Up’arry to victory in the Plate in 2024, marking a memorable moment for both himself and Redknapp.
The Welsh jockey fondly recalled the excitement of winning for Redknapp and the special atmosphere surrounding their triumph at the Festival. Despite the pressure, Jones approached each race with confidence, aiming for success while appreciating the unique experience of riding for a prominent figure like Redknapp.
