“Backlash Grows Over UK Politician’s Comments on Muslim Prayers”

Kemi Badenoch faces criticism for her support of a colleague who made controversial remarks about Muslim prayers. Calls are growing for Badenoch to dismiss Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Timothy after he expressed disapproval of an Open Iftar event at Trafalgar Square, labeling it as unwelcome.

The event, a public Muslim prayer at the iconic London landmark, is a regular occurrence for worshippers of various faiths. However, Timothy’s comments characterizing the prayer as an “act of domination and division” have sparked backlash.

During the Tory local election campaign launch, Badenoch stood by Timothy, praising him as “fantastic” and defending his stance. She emphasized the importance of religious freedom in the UK but raised concerns about the expression of religion in public spaces aligning with British cultural norms.

In response, Labour Party Chair Anna Turley criticized Badenoch for not taking action against Timothy, accusing her of cowardice and failure to condemn his comments. Turley condemned the Tories for what she perceived as aligning with divisive views endorsed by Tommy Robinson regarding Muslims praying peacefully in London.

Timothy had argued that such religious rituals should be conducted in mosques rather than in public areas. However, similar religious gatherings, like the Jewish Chanukah celebration and Easter Sunday processions, have long been part of London’s diverse landscape.
