Britons are set to experience heavy snowfall exceeding 15cm in a -3C Arctic surge, accompanied by a Met Office advisory in effect.
The United Kingdom has been pummeled by intense rainfall and fierce winds this week, with temperatures now dropping as low-pressure systems move in from the northwest.
The regions most severely impacted by the wintry weather are expected to be in the north, particularly with weather maps indicating 17cm of snowfall in western Scotland on Friday. Flurries are also anticipated in the northwest regions of England and Wales.
A snow and ice warning has been issued by the Met Office for central Scotland, valid from midnight until 9am on Friday morning.
According to the national weather agency, “Blustery wintry showers will impact central and northwest Scotland on Thursday afternoon and evening, becoming more frequent overnight and easing by Friday morning. Snow accumulation of 2-5 cm is forecast across the area, with up to 10 cm possible in elevated areas above 350 meters.”
Residents within the alerted areas are advised to anticipate potential traffic disruptions and to prepare by carrying essential supplies in their vehicles.
The Met Office advises, “Snowy and wintry conditions can lead to travel delays and hazardous driving conditions. Ensure safety by planning your route, allowing extra travel time, checking for road closures or transport delays, and adjusting plans accordingly.”
Overnight forecasts indicate, “Heavy rain clearing southeast across England and Wales tonight, with clear spells, showers – some wintry, and more persistent rain and snow over Scottish high ground, accompanied by possible frost and ice. Windy conditions are expected to gradually ease.”
For Friday, expect a cold and windy day with a mix of sunshine and blustery showers, potentially merging into more persistent rain and snow in certain areas, especially over northern hills.
The cold spell is projected to persist through the weekend before temperatures begin to rise next week.
Looking ahead to March 17-26, the Met Office forecasts a period of generally settled weather across much of the UK, initially with wet and windy conditions in the northwest. However, a shift towards more settled conditions is expected from midweek onwards, with the potential for dry weather nationwide by the weekend. Some chance of overnight frost and fog may occur, but daytime conditions should feature pleasant spring sunshine, particularly away from exposed coastal areas with brisk easterly winds.
The longevity of the settled weather remains uncertain, with indications suggesting a return of showers or rain later in the period, possibly affecting southern regions more prominently.
