Newcastle legend Alan Shearer, renowned for defying expectations in his Premier League career, celebrated a remarkable victory when his horse, Akilak, triumphed at 50-1 odds at the Cheltenham Festival. Despite missing the race in 2005, Shearer was leading Newcastle against Coventry City in the FA Cup fourth round.
During the match at St James’ Park, Shearer’s friends, who were co-owners of Akilak, relayed the race outcome to him in real-time from his private box. Initially skeptical, Shearer was pleasantly surprised to learn of the victory, which coincided with Newcastle’s 3-1 win over Coventry, with Shearer scoring a goal.
Reflecting on the experience, Shearer recalled the amusing moment when his friends signaled the win to him at half-time. Beyond Akilak, Shearer also co-owned Augusta Kate and enjoyed the thrill of participating in the Cheltenham Festival.
While it remains uncertain if Shearer will attend this year’s Festival, a horse named Shearer will compete in the St. James’s Place Festival Challenge Cup Open Hunters’ Chase, following a fifth-place finish in the previous year’s race. The Jockey Club offers various ticket options for each day of the event at discounted rates.
