Owners of Apple’s AirTags, small tracking devices, have found various practical uses for them. These include locating lost items like wallets, securing them in a car’s glove compartment, or attaching them to a pet’s collar.
Daniel Scott, a frequent traveler, placed one of these £30 devices in his luggage before flying from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles in August. Upon landing at LAX, a mishap by the baggage handlers led passengers to the wrong baggage carousel.
Despite the confusion, Daniel quickly used the ‘Find My’ app on his phone to track his missing suitcase. He discovered it was moving away from the terminal towards a taxi rank. Daniel sprinted to the location, keeping up with the moving tracker until it reached a deserted building half a mile away.
While outside the building, Daniel’s partner contacted the police about the theft. The officers arrived, shone flashlights through the windows, and apprehended the culprits. To Daniel’s surprise, he saw one of the thieves wearing his clothes through the window.
After the police secured the scene, Daniel was allowed to enter the building and retrieve his ripped-open suitcase with his belongings scattered inside. He advises others in similar situations to wait for law enforcement rather than confronting thieves themselves.
Despite the chaotic experience, Daniel expressed relief and happiness at recovering most of his possessions. The incident was described as “crazy” by Daniel, who was grateful for getting his belongings back.
