“Abandoned Camelot Theme Park Transformed into Haunting Scare City”

A once-thriving theme park with a spooky and abandoned ambiance has found a new, chilling purpose, hinting at a future transformation. The Magical Kingdom of Camelot, established in 1983 and drawing half a million visitors yearly at its peak, was known for its enchanting King Arthur theme and standout white castle entrance. Adorned with exhilarating rides like Whirlwind and Excalibur, the park’s standout attraction was the £3 million Knightmare roller coaster added in 2006. Despite its popularity, the park’s allure dwindled over the years, leading to a significant drop in attendance to just 336,000 by 2005 before closing permanently in 2012.

Spanning 140 acres and valued at approximately £800 million, Camelot became a ghostly shell of its former glory, attracting attention from urban explorers like Matthew Holmes in 2017. The desolate park later hosted the spine-chilling Scare City event in 2024, offering a horrifying experience for horror enthusiasts. The event featured 11 terrifying zones spread across the dilapidated grounds, including the eerie Carni Valley with recognizable characters making a sinister comeback.

The heart-pounding experience immersed guests in a trail of terror, combining intricate setups and live actors across various zones to terrify even the bravest attendees. From the bone-chilling Reaper’s Reach to the ghastly Slaughter House and the unnerving Arakhne zone, visitors were in for a nightmarish journey. While seeking refuge in the ‘Resurrection Zone’ for a break, attendees could catch their breath before continuing their spine-tingling adventure.

Recently, the abandoned park has piqued the interest of property developers, particularly Story Homes, aiming to construct a substantial residential development on the site. Despite previous rejections due to greenbelt land concerns, the firm has submitted revised proposals to Chorley Council outlining plans for a housing scheme consisting of up to 350 properties, half of which will be affordable housing. The project also includes a community facility, green spaces, parking, and other essential infrastructure to create a new, vibrant community in the area. The vision for the site emphasizes exceptional quality, design standards, and mindful placemaking to address housing needs and affordability challenges while respecting the surrounding natural environment.
