“Ontario Allocates $10M for Skilled Trades Training”

Ontario has allocated $10 million towards six programs aimed at providing individuals with training in skilled trades through the Skills Development Fund. This fund came under scrutiny following findings by the province’s auditor general last year, highlighting issues with the selection process and distribution of funds from the $2.5 billion initiative lacking fairness, transparency, and accountability.

Allegations have been raised by opposition parties, prompting an investigation by Integrity Commissioner Cathryn Motherwell into claims that Labour Minister David Piccini violated ethics rules in the allocation of skills training funding. In response, the government has implemented changes for the sixth round of funding selection, now requiring applicants to disclose the involvement of registered lobbyists and scrutinizing individuals associated with applications, in addition to the organizations.

The latest $10 million in skills development funding will support various projects, including training led by the YMCA for construction roles, automotive service training, and a program focused on equipping young individuals with skills in the electrical trades. Minister Piccini emphasized that the fund plays a vital role in helping individuals establish rewarding careers and bolstering the workforce responsible for constructing homes and infrastructure in Ontario.
