“Windsor Election Sees Uncontested Races in Wards 1 and 9”

The deadline for Windsor’s municipal election candidates to submit their paperwork is approaching, and the current list of nominations suggests that two of the city’s wards may be uncontested. Ward 1 and Ward 9 currently have only one candidate each on their ballots. If no additional candidates emerge by the end of Friday, Darcie Renaud in Ward 1 and Kieran McKenzie in Ward 9 will secure their council seats without opposition, marking the first time in over 30 years for Windsor City Hall to witness such uncontested victories.

Kieran McKenzie, the incumbent councillor for Ward 9, emphasized the importance of active participation in the democratic process for a robust democracy. Despite the lack of opposing candidates, McKenzie remains focused on his campaign, highlighting the significance of managing growth and development in Ward 9, which encompasses a significant portion of the city, including the region’s upcoming mega-hospital site.

In Ward 1, Fred Francis, who has served as councillor since 2014, has stepped down to run for mayor after three terms. Darcie Renaud is currently the sole contender for the Ward 1 seat, determined to earn her place on the council through dedicated campaigning efforts, irrespective of the potential lack of rivals. The upcoming municipal election on Oct. 26 will see a variety of candidates vying for different positions, with the mayoral race having the largest pool of contenders, including Francis and six others.

Incumbent mayor Drew Dilkens has yet to disclose his intentions for the election, noting a decrease in the number of candidates compared to previous years. Dilkens expressed concern over the limited participation, emphasizing the importance of encouraging more individuals to run for office. Nominations are set to close on Friday, Aug. 21, at 2 p.m., with a total of 20 fewer candidates on the ballots this year compared to the previous election cycle.
