Hyundai Customer Demands Compensation After Vehicle Fire

Three months after experiencing a distressing vehicle fire incident, Jason Pelletier is eagerly awaiting responses and seeking additional compensation from Hyundai, the automaker involved.

On a regular morning commute to work on June 9, while driving his Santa Fe on a busy Toronto highway, Pelletier was shocked when his vehicle suddenly burst into flames. Thick black smoke and fire emerged from the hood, rendering the engine and brakes unresponsive. Maneuvering through traffic on the 401 highway, Pelletier struggled to exit the vehicle before witnessing a subsequent explosion.

Adding to his dismay, Pelletier had recently taken his SUV to the dealership for maintenance where a head gasket replacement was conducted. Despite noticing a burning odor post-service, reassurances from the service manager initially calmed his concerns. Subsequent messages to the service manager regarding smoke from the hood went unanswered, leading to the eventual fire outbreak.

The following day, a warning message displayed on the vehicle’s touchscreen alerted Pelletier to a potential engine control system issue, advising a comprehensive system check. Despite attempts to contact the service manager, no response was received before the fire incident.

Hyundai Canada declined interview requests but emphasized their commitment to safety as a top priority. Nitish Bissonauth, senior manager of corporate communications at Hyundai, stated that the situation was still under review, precluding further comments at the time.

Following the incident, Pelletier’s insurer provided compensation amounting to nearly $22,000, covering the vehicle’s pre-fire value and a month’s rental car cost. However, Pelletier estimates personal losses exceeding $5,000, including belongings and items essential for his alter ego during Pride Month festivities.

While his Santa Fe undergoes forensic examination in a distant location, Pelletier expresses astonishment at the lengthy investigation period and contemplates potential preventive measures that could have averted the fire incident. Expressing skepticism towards Hyundai, Pelletier is now considering purchasing a different brand of SUV, relinquishing his loyalty to the automaker.

Amidst the ongoing situation, Pelletier remains hopeful for closure and fair resolution, emphasizing the significance of vehicle safety and consumer trust in the automotive industry.
