“Canada Allocates $100M to Boost Steel Industry”

The Canadian government has allocated $100 million to support the country’s steel industry through a new initiative. This program will cover half of the transportation expenses for Canadian-made steel when shipped or transported by rail within Canada.

Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon unveiled the Commodities Sectoral Support Program in Hamilton, stating that it is a direct response to the U.S. tariffs imposed on Canadian steel, aluminum, copper, and related products. The U.S. has imposed tariffs ranging from 10 to 50 percent on these Canadian goods.

MacKinnon emphasized the strategic importance of Hamilton’s steel industry and steel producers across Canada, pledging to safeguard and enhance the industry’s growth and prosperity.

The program, effective immediately, will provide rebates to companies for 50 percent of the expenses incurred in transporting certified Canadian steel between provinces. It is set to run for a year or until the $100 million budget is depleted, with a maximum rebate of $50 million per producer.

In case the funding is exhausted before the program’s scheduled end, MacKinnon hinted at a potential extension, stating that adjustments will be made based on the program’s uptake and effectiveness.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, campaigning in Quebec, proposed extending the current gas and diesel excise tax holiday and eliminating the industrial carbon tax to make steel transport more cost-effective.

The initiative is part of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s efforts to boost the Canadian economy by streamlining and reducing the costs of domestic product shipping. Industry leaders, such as Ron Bedard from ArcelorMittal Dofasco, anticipate significant positive impacts across all provinces due to the improved accessibility to Canadian steel.

Jason Card from the Chamber of Marine Commerce expressed satisfaction with the program, emphasizing its role in supporting the steel industry, enhancing supply chains, and fortifying the national economy by facilitating the movement of steel across various regions and purposes.
