Barry and Eddie Hearn have exceeded the £1 billion milestone with their successful sports media empire. The duo, father, and son, are the owners of Matchroom Sports, a company involved in boxing, snooker, and darts.
Barry initially made his mark in snooker during the 1970s, where he managed the renowned six-time world champion Steve Davis. Establishing Matchroom in 1982, the 77-year-old laid the foundation, and his son Eddie, aged 46, played a pivotal role in expanding the empire, particularly in the boxing realm.
Matchroom’s portfolio includes iconic figures such as Frank Bruno, Chris Eubank Sr, Lennox Lewis, and the current boxing sensation Anthony Joshua. Barry also holds the position of chairman at the Professional Darts Corporation, contributing to the surge in darts’ popularity. Additionally, he has a significant influence in snooker, having acquired the World Snooker Tour in 2010.
Their endeavors have propelled them to significant wealth, positioning them as the third richest individuals in UK sports, with a combined net worth of £1.035 billion, trailing only F1 magnate Bernie Ecclestone (£2bn) and David and Victoria Beckham (£1.185bn) on The Sunday Times rich list.
Surpassing F1 driver Sir Lewis Hamilton, who holds the fifth spot with £435m, are Matchroom’s top clients, with Anthony Joshua ranking eighth at an estimated £240m, followed by Tyson Fury at ninth with £162m. England captain Harry Kane and tennis legend Sir Andy Murray share the tenth spot, each with £110m.
While Barry laid the groundwork for the Matchroom empire, Eddie’s significant contributions have been instrumental in its expansion. In a 2020 piece for the Big Issue, Eddie acknowledged the drive instilled in him by his father, emphasizing his determination to surpass his achievements and elevate the business to greater heights.
