“Starmer Backs PM’s Plan to Align with EU Rules Swiftly”

The UK’s potential alignment with European Union rules without requiring individual votes from Members of Parliament has been backed by Keir Starmer. This initiative is part of the Prime Minister’s efforts to improve relations with Brussels, involving the introduction of a new law enabling the swift adoption of single market regulations in the country’s favor.

Under the proposed legislation, known as Henry VIII powers, ministers could enact laws through secondary legislation without full parliamentary scrutiny. This mechanism, to be outlined in the King’s Speech, might result in automatic approval of plans by MPs without detailed examination, as secondary legislation cannot be amended by Parliament.

Starmer emphasized that any law facilitating this process would first need approval from MPs. He stressed the importance of forging a stronger bond with Europe for the benefit of the UK, citing advantages in defense, security, energy, and the economy.

The Prime Minister underlined the necessity of closer ties with Europe amidst global conflicts and uncertainties, highlighting the potential benefits for trade facilitation, business operations, and cost reduction. However, critics raised concerns that the use of secondary legislation to align with Brussels’ rules could marginalize Westminster, with some labeling the plan as “outrageous.”

While reaffirming that the UK will not rejoin the single market, Chancellor Rachel Reeves indicated that deviations from Brussels regulations should be exceptions rather than the norm. The government assured that the new law would undergo standard parliamentary procedures, with parliamentary oversight on any new EU-related laws resulting from future treaties or agreements.

Moreover, negotiations are ongoing between Britain and the EU for various collaborations, including a youth mobility scheme, a common sanitary and phytosanitary area, and aligning emissions trading systems. These discussions aim to address key areas of mutual interest before a joint summit later this year.
