Nigel Farage faced a group of irate demonstrators during a trip to the Shetland Islands, with one person labeling him a ‘scrounger’. The leader of Reform UK was seen campaigning in Lerwick after attending a party rally in Aberdeen the previous night.
In a video circulating on social media, Farage engaged with a protester outside public restrooms, suggesting the need for more financially successful individuals in politics to elevate everyone’s wealth. However, the demonstrator retorted by accusing Farage of advocating for more billionaires in politics, likening them to freeloaders like himself.
Farage eventually walked away, dismissing the hecklers as emblematic of “modern-day Marxism” and expressing his belief that they were “deluded” and “sinister”. Additionally, a sign along one of Shetland’s main roads crudely referred to the Clacton MP.
Reform UK is participating in the upcoming Scottish parliament election on May 7, currently ranking third in recent opinion polls behind Labour and the SNP. Vic Currie is representing them in the Shetland constituency vote.
Scottish Labour candidate John Erskine criticized Farage’s visit, predicting that the people of Shetland and Scotland would reject him at the polls. He labeled Farage as a polarizing figure who would only assist the SNP in retaining power, emphasizing the need for change and denouncing what he perceived as Tory deception and divisive politics.
During a recent party rally in Aberdeen, Farage asserted his party’s potential to secure “outright power” at Holyrood by 2031. He expressed confidence in Malcolm Offord, the Reform leader in Scotland, to lead the party to success, outlining his plan to gain control in the future.
