Two individuals have lost their lives, and 19 others have been admitted to the hospital following a chemical leakage at a facility in West Virginia. The incident occurred at the Catalyst Refiners plant, a silver recovery establishment in Institute, around 9:30 am EDT on Wednesday. The Kanawha County Commission Emergency Management Director, C.W. Sigman, mentioned that the leak was a result of a “violent reaction of chemicals.”
The plant was undergoing cleaning and decontamination procedures in preparation for shutdown when a chemical gas reaction involving nitric acid and another substance took place, generating hydrogen sulfide, a highly toxic gas. Sigman emphasized the dangerous nature of chemical reactions during initiation or conclusion.
A critical condition has been reported for one individual, as stated by Kanawha County Commission President Ben Salango. Among the injured are seven ambulance personnel who responded to the incident. Several individuals were transported to hospitals by private vehicles or unconventional means like a garbage truck.
Vandalia Health Charleston Area Medical Center, among the medical facilities in the area, is treating multiple patients exhibiting respiratory symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, sore throat, and itchy eyes. Patients are currently being evaluated in the emergency department.
A shelter-in-place directive was issued for the surrounding vicinity and was lifted over five hours later. Authorities conducted a large-scale decontamination operation, requiring individuals to discard contaminated clothing and undergo spraying.
Catalyst Refiners specializes in extracting silver residue from chemical processes, with the potential to recover significant amounts of the precious metal. Ames Goldsmith Corp., the parent company of Catalyst Refiners, expressed condolences for the fatalities, emphasizing their commitment to cooperating with investigating authorities at all levels.
The plant is situated near Institute, a community approximately 10 miles west of Charleston, the state capital.
