“UK Unveils Plans for New Towns with Thousands of Homes”

Ministers have disclosed the sites for seven potential new towns that could provide housing for tens of thousands of residents. Among these locations are Manchester Victoria North, which could accommodate up to 15,000 homes and will feature a new Metrolink stop. Other areas include Tempsford in Bedfordshire, set to house around 40,000 residents near a new East West rail station, and Thamesmead in Greenwich, where 15,000 new homes are planned.

The final locations for these new towns, part of a significant housebuilding initiative described as the most ambitious in 50 years, are anticipated to be confirmed by the end of 2026. The Labour Party’s manifesto had pledged to establish a new generation of towns inspired by the legacy of the 1945 Labour government.

Recent reports suggested that one of the new towns might be named Attleeton, in honor of former Prime Minister Clement Attlee, while another option was Elizabethtown, paying tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth. However, decisions on the names of these new towns are yet to be finalized.

Keir Starmer has committed to breaking ground on these new towns by 2029 to address the housing crisis, aiming for at least 40% of the homes to be affordable, including social housing. Housing Secretary Steve Reed highlighted the importance of providing affordable homes, functional local infrastructure, and job opportunities within thriving communities through the development of these new towns.

Mayor Andy Burnham expressed appreciation for the proposed new town in Greater Manchester, emphasizing the significance of the Victoria North project as a major regeneration endeavor in one of the fastest-growing city-regions in the UK. Chancellor Rachel Reeves underscored the need for planning reform to facilitate the construction of new homes and foster the growth of vibrant communities in dynamic cities.

The proposed new towns in various regions include Tempsford in Bedfordshire with a potential of 40,000 homes, Crews Hill and Chase Park in Enfield with a capacity for 21,000 homes, Leeds South Bank in West Yorkshire with up to 20,000 homes, and others in Greater Manchester, Greenwich, South Gloucestershire, and Buckinghamshire.
