“Experts Warn of £332 Energy Bill Increase in UK”

Concerns have been raised by experts regarding heat pumps amid predictions of inflation risks in the UK.

A recent forecast indicates a potential increase of £332 in annual household energy bills starting in July. The sharp rise in wholesale prices is expected to impact Ofgem’s price cap, as per the latest projections.

Analysts at Cornwall Insight reported a significant increase in the forecast for Ofgem’s price cap for typical dual fuel households from July to September, now reaching £1,973 annually. This represents a £332 hike from April’s cap, marking a substantial change from previous forecasts. Chancellor Rachel Reeves aims to maintain low inflation and interest rates while the UK government under Sir Keir Starmer focuses on boosting economic growth.

Jess Ralston, Head of Energy at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), commented on the latest prediction for Ofgem’s July price cap by Cornwall Insight, highlighting the potential rise exceeding £300 compared to April’s cap.

Ralston emphasized the need to transition to electric heat pumps and renewables to stabilize energy bills, attributing the current challenges to global gas market fluctuations. Cornwall Insight continues to update their forecasts weekly amidst the escalating US-Israel conflict with Iran and ongoing volatility in the energy market.

While wholesale prices may normalize post-conflict, Cornwall suggests that some volatility will impact the next price cap covering July to September. The exact increase will depend on the duration of elevated gas prices and market disruptions.

The Government’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero spokesperson cautioned that Cornwall’s forecasts are speculative due to the unpredictability of wholesale price fluctuations. Efforts are underway to address the affordability crisis, with a 7% reduction in energy prices effective April 1, translating to a £117 annual saving for most households.

Recent surges in UK natural gas prices, reaching a three-year high on Thursday with a subsequent slight decline on Friday, have raised concerns about potential impacts on future electricity prices and heating costs.
