“Violent Clash Mars Tyne-Wear Derby at Newcastle’s St James’ Park”

Violence erupted outside St James’ Park ahead of the Tyne-Wear derby on Sunday between Newcastle and Sunderland. The visiting Black Cats were playing at their rivals’ home ground for the first time in over a decade, after winning the previous match at the Stadium of Light.

Despite a significant police presence, skirmishes broke out among some fans before the midday kickoff. Eyewitnesses reported that a small group of Sunderland supporters separated from the police escort and clashed with a large group of home fans, leading to violent confrontations. One individual reportedly required CPR before being taken away.

Northumbria Police had outlined the security measures for the match, advising Sunderland fans on their arrival at the stadium. The police-supported escort for Sunderland supporters from Newcastle Central Station was set to depart at 10:15 am to ensure their safe passage to St James’ Park.

Chief Superintendent Hall emphasized the importance of following police guidance to maintain a safe environment for all attendees. Zero tolerance toward troublemakers was stressed, with strict actions promised against anyone causing disturbances. Additional police presence was planned in both city centers and at the stadium to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience for all supporters.
