A man known as a ‘violent bully’ has been found guilty of murdering his girlfriend after subjecting her to prolonged and extreme abuse.
Dale Cole caused severe internal injuries to his vulnerable partner, Lisa Holland, in their residence in Burton-on-Trent. Tragically, on October 20, 2020, the 39-year-old passed away following a fatal fall within the home.
Prosecutors stated that her demise was the culmination of an extended period of abuse by Cole. Evidence revealed that Ms. Holland had sustained at least 30 broken ribs before her death, with Cole being described as violent, domineering, and controlling.
On the particular day, Cole flew into a rage upon returning from work to find the front door locked. Upon gaining entry to the house, he was visibly angry.
During the trial at Stafford Crown Court, Cole was convicted of murdering his partner. Additionally, he was found guilty of three counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, having previously admitted to engaging in controlling behavior towards Ms. Holland between October 2018 and October 2022.
Witnesses testified that Cole exhibited violent and manipulative behavior towards Ms. Holland, who struggled with alcohol dependency. Neighbors reported hearing disturbing sounds and witnessed signs of abuse.
Graphic photographs taken by Cole showed Ms. Holland unconscious on the stairs before emergency services arrived. A post-mortem examination revealed numerous broken ribs, indicating sustained abuse over several weeks.
In his testimony, Cole admitted to physical altercations with Ms. Holland but denied intending to cause serious harm. He attributed his actions to difficulties in coping with her drinking habits.
The court heard that over £35,000 was transferred to Cole from Ms. Holland’s account, with references suggesting coercion and control.
The family of Ms. Holland expressed profound grief over her loss and praised the efforts of law enforcement in seeking justice.
Lorraine Anson, representing the Crown Prosecution Service, emphasized the severity of Cole’s abuse and commended the collaborative efforts to bring him to justice.
