Personal finance guru Martin Lewis has identified a major energy drain in homes, advising people to steer clear of a particular household appliance to reduce their bills. Energy bills in the UK are expected to surge by £332 annually starting in July, attributed to significant spikes in wholesale prices triggered by the Middle East conflict impacting Ofgem’s price cap. Analysts indicate that the price cap for typical dual fuel households is projected to rise to £1,973 per year from July to September, marking a £332 increase compared to April.
Lewis, in a previous recommendation on his BBC Radio 5 podcast, emphasized minimizing the use of tumble dryers, which cost around £1 per load. He highlighted that tumble dryers are expensive to operate and suggested opting for air-drying clothes outside or utilizing dehumidifiers to reduce electricity consumption. Responding to a listener’s concern about dampness from indoor drying, Lewis explained that dehumidifiers are more energy-efficient than heating, leading to lower electricity costs.
Furthermore, Lewis proposed installing reflective panels behind radiators to prevent heat loss through walls, enhancing room heating efficiency. Reflective material placed behind external wall radiators can help retain heat indoors, with cost-effective alternatives like tin foil also being effective. Additionally, adjusting the flow rate on boilers can result in gas bill savings of over 9%, complemented by tips such as optimizing TV energy settings, identifying and sealing drafts in the house, and turning off unused room radiators to avoid unnecessary heating expenses.
For those interested, a 4-meter roll of radiator heat reflector foil is available at Screwfix for £6.39. Lewis’ advice aims to help households manage their energy usage effectively and reduce unnecessary expenses, especially during times of rising energy costs.
