The housing market also presents challenges, with young adults potentially having to rely on their parents’ spare room until their 40s due to financial constraints from student loan repayments. Amidst these struggles, the environmental crisis looms large, impacting the future that today’s youth will inherit.
The political landscape is also skewed towards older generations, with the average age of members in the House of Lords being 70, significantly higher than the average age of the British population. This disparity raises concerns about the representation of younger voices in decision-making processes that directly affect their future.
Efforts such as Labour’s proposed £1 billion youth employment scheme are steps in the right direction but may not be enough to address the systemic issues at hand. Urgent actions are needed, including addressing the student debt burden, increasing social housing availability, incentivizing job decentralization, promoting early retirement for older workers, and fostering youth representation in political spheres by reducing the voting age to 16.
