Couple Urges Donation of Illegally Built Mansion to Charity

A couple who constructed a 6,220 square-foot residence is urging authorities to donate the property to a housing charity rather than demolishing it, as the local council initiates the demolition process.

Chris and Rose Murray built their large home at Faughan Hill in Bohermeen, County Meath, Ireland in 2006 without planning permission from Meath County Council, despite previous denials. The house, twice the size of the permitted structure, has faced several planning refusals and appeals over the years.

The legal battle concluded on Monday when the council took control of the family’s property, and demolition began on Thursday amid objections from the owners, who are pursuing a human rights case.

Mrs. Murray expressed her distress on Monday, stating that her family, including their 19 and 24-year-old children, faced homelessness and appealed for the house to be given to charity. She recounted being forcibly removed from the property, highlighting the emotional toll on her family.

Although acknowledging their wrongdoing, the couple vehemently opposed the demolition and proposed repurposing the house. Despite legal efforts to halt the demolition, a High Court judge upheld the enforcement of the orders, leading to the destruction of the building.

The demolition operation, carried out by a security team and supported by the council and police, involved the removal of personal belongings as directed by the court. The council emphasized compliance with legal directives and expressed gratitude for cooperation during the process.

As the legal proceedings continue, Meath County Council refrained from providing further comments at this time.
