Iran’s leadership suffered a blow as one of its key figures was killed in recent airstrikes following threats made against the US. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed the death of their spokesperson, Ali Mohammad Naini, in joint strikes carried out by the United States and Israel. Naini, who had been serving as the IRGC spokesman since 2024, was described as a martyr in a statement released by the IRGC.
The assassination of Naini occurred shortly after his appearance on national television, where he emphasized Iran’s continued missile production capabilities even during wartime. This event adds to a string of high-profile assassinations targeting senior Iranian officials in a span of just three weeks.
Among the notable figures who have been killed recently are Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was succeeded by his son Mojtaba Khamenei, and Ali Larijani, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. Additionally, Brigadier General Gholamreza Soleimani and Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib were also reported dead within a 48-hour period.
In a separate incident, an Iranian man and a woman were arrested for attempting to gain unauthorized access to the naval base where Britain’s nuclear submarines are stationed. The pair, who lacked security passes, were turned away but later apprehended for acting suspiciously in the vicinity. Police Scotland confirmed the arrests and stated that the investigation is ongoing.
The naval base in question, HM Naval Base Clyde, commonly known as Faslane, houses four Trident-armed ballistic missile submarines and seven Astute-class nuclear-powered attack submarines of the Royal Navy. These submarines play a crucial role in the UK’s continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent and possess the capability to launch precision strikes with Tomahawk land-attack cruise missiles.
