An individual from Iran has been apprehended following an attempt to access the naval base where Britain’s four nuclear submarines are stationed. The 34-year-old man, accompanied by an unidentified woman, approached the entrance of HM Naval Base Clyde, known as Faslane, on Thursday while traveling in a vehicle.
As reported by The Times, the pair were denied entry due to a lack of security passes. However, their suspicious behavior in the vicinity led to their subsequent arrest. A spokesperson from Police Scotland confirmed the incident, stating that the man and woman were taken into custody in connection with the attempted entry to HM Naval Base Clyde on Thursday.
Further details regarding the nature of their suspicious activities, such as potential photography or engagement in prohibited behaviors at the base, have not been disclosed. A spokesperson for the Royal Navy mentioned that two individuals who unsuccessfully tried to enter HM Naval Base Clyde on March 19 have been arrested by Police Scotland. Due to an ongoing investigation, no additional comments will be provided.
Faslane serves as the operational hub for four Trident-armed ballistic missile submarines, which are integral to the UK’s continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent. Additionally, the base accommodates the Royal Navy’s seven Astute-class nuclear-powered attack submarines, equipped to launch precision Tomahawk land-attack cruise missiles targeting distant inland locations.
