The head of the well-known pub chain Wetherspoon has cautioned that the ongoing conflict in Iran is likely to result in price hikes across the hospitality sector.
Chairman and founder Sir Tim Martin expressed his concerns, drawing parallels with the energy price increases seen in the 1970s that negatively impacted consumers and businesses. He emphasized the importance of affordable energy for the British society and highlighted the potential repercussions of rising prices.
During an interview on BBC Radio 4’s Today program, Sir Tim predicted that prices within the industry, including at Wetherspoon, would see an upward trend. Despite the challenging circumstances, he pledged to maintain competitive pricing strategies.
Apart from energy costs, businesses like pubs are facing additional financial pressures from rising minimum wages and employer contributions. Sir Tim acknowledged that these cost escalations would contribute to overall inflation in the UK economy.
Attributing a significant drop in profits to increased government-imposed expenses, Sir Tim underscored the impact on Wetherspoon’s financial performance. Despite the profit decline, the chain reported a notable increase in sales, with particular growth in drinks sales and other revenue streams.
Detailed financial results revealed substantial increases in operating costs for JD Wetherspoon, including notable spikes in wage bills, repair expenses, and business rates. In response to concerns about pub closures, the government introduced business rate discounts, which Sir Tim deemed insufficient.
Sir Tim reiterated his call for tax equality with supermarkets and a reduction in VAT rates, criticizing rival executives for not supporting these initiatives. He warned that without tax reform, pubs could become exclusive venues due to escalating prices, potentially impacting their role as community gathering places.
As of January, Wetherspoon operated 794 pubs with plans for further expansion. Additionally, several new pubs, including one at Spain’s Alicante Airport, have recently opened, with more launches on the horizon.
